This is definately one of my favorites because of it’s romantic beauty. The drawing depicts four warped docs hidden to most land-dwellers by a patch of dense vegetation. A short hike or a boat ride around the corner from the newer boat launch reveals these beautifully archaic and rustic docs in Spring Lake, Michigan [Click for satellite map] where my Aunt and Uncle store their boat.

This piece was merely created to represent my skills in shading as part of my portfolio. This may seem ironic, since most of my drawings rarely incorporate true shading rather than chiaroscuro. I’m skilled in both but most often appreciate more the value and depth that chiaroscuro creates within a work. Other than a presentation of my shading skills, there is not much metaphorical value to this piece.
Construction
This was a simple pencil drawing on white 9×12 paper that was later blown up to a 11×14 photo print. I’m unsure the pencil used to create the work. Trace amounts of sunscreen melted by the hot summer sun is evident in the original piece too. However, you won’t see it in the print. This piece took two days to complete.

While straddling a guardrail along the bustling Burton Street Bridge [Click for satellite map], I only had enough time to safely do a sketch of the many rail lines that parallel the highway. The flying flute in this composition quite simply represents music shedding its feathers and offering its sound to the two figures. The sound penetrates both the head and mind of one figure as well as the chest and body of the other. The drawing proves that people not only hear music; they are effected by it cognitively, then physically. A chain-reaction modifies their body via the mind. Their state, actions, feelings, and beliefs are all changed because of music and may continue the process by effecting others.

The debate over whether to add or not to add text to any of my drawings is usually a long one. The debate over whether to create a work revolving around drug experiences is almost always equally as long if not longer.
Between the Lines
Drugs, parties, relationships such as sexual partners and lovers all share a special relationship to me. This piece explores the time-frame that unity and togetherness exists in these three areas. Special focus is put on the bliss that the peek of a drug reaction or relationship offers and the depression that either offers towards the end. (Symbols that represent parties or gatherings in this piece are there to bridge the metaphors of drugs and relationships in the drawing.)
Construction
Though this 9×12 piece was created using a single darkness of pencil, the work utilizes value to draw attention to certain areas of the composition and to guide the viewer’s eye through it. This is part of my portfolio and is intended to demonstrate how I use my understanding of how value works for more conceptual and metaphorical purposes.

While living with my grandparents in a rural neighborhood due to a handicapping injury, I was exposed to a slower pace of life and to more rustic scenery. This image depicts the fine craft of using less technologically advanced tools to labor goods that one can take more pride and joy in creating.

I’ve always struggled to see where metaphor and meaning fits into still-life drawings. However, there are still things like composition, the items depicted, and how they are drawn that, to me, make a significant impact on the overall reasons for creating a still-life. This still-life drawing relies minimally on composition to makes its impact, but the items that were carefully drawn are metaphors of a way of life that is often overlooked by people living more hastily. The materials used, also, are intended to convey an archaic sense of time and a rustic mood.
Construction
There is a combination here of colored charcoals and graphite to give an aged appearance. The still-life was drawn on normal 9×12 pure white paper.
